2022 Toyota Prius Prices, Reviews, and Pictures

Although the five-passenger Toyota Prius hybrid is known for its outstanding fuel economy, it is not the most efficient hybrid in its class. Although it has many standard safety features, and select trims offer all-wheel drive, it is not very engaging to drive.

Although the Toyota Prius is one of the most well-known hybrids, its wedge-shaped design may not be for everyone. The Prius can hold a lot of cargo if you embrace its quirkiness. The large rear opening allows you to store larger items than other hatchbacks. The interior is spacious and comfortable, with five people comfortably seated. There are four trim levels and an option for all-wheel drive. This makes it easy to choose the right version for you and your budget. You don’t have to go up in trim levels to enjoy the many safety features that are standard across the range. The standard infotainment features a large screen, smartphone connectivity, and a touchscreen that is tablet-sized on the top trim. Only two trims are available for the Honda Insight. The Insight comes with a more powerful engine, and starts at a higher price. Both the Hyundai Ioniq and Kia Niro have powerful engines. The Ioniq is also more affordable. All of them offer all-wheel drive.

Pricing and Trims

Toyota offers five trims for the Prius: L Eco (LE), LE, XLE (XLE), Nightshade (Limited), and Limited. We prefer the XLE, although the LE is the most popular trim. We’ll tell you why.

L Eco

The entry-level L Eco model starts from $25,550 and includes a $995 destination charge. Standard features include 15-inch wheels, cloth seating, an infotainment touchscreen of 7 inches, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa as well as automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and full-speed dynamic radar cruise controller. There are no option packages.

The LE starts at $26,760. It includes an intermittent rear wiper and cargo area cover. Optional all-wheel drive can be added for $1,400

The XLE starts from $29,770 and includes standard 17-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers and auto-on headlights. It also features heated front seats, eight-way power driver, heated synthetic leather-clad steering column, an auto-dimming rearview, and a wireless charging pad. For $1,000, all-wheel drive is possible. You can also choose from a tilt-and-slide power moonroof, 15 inch wheels, color head up display, adaptive front lighting, and automatic-leveling headlights. We love the XLE trim for its extensive list of comfort features.

The Nightshade, which costs $30,470, is a modified XLE model. It adds blacked out trim to the XLE model. This includes blacked-out mirror caps and black door handles. The interior is finished with a semi-glossy black center console. There are three exterior colors available: Super White, Midnight Black Metallic and Silver Metallic.

The Limited starts at $33,845 and includes standard adaptive front lighting, automatic-leveling headlights and an 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen. There is also a 10-speaker JBL stereo system, navigation, and a color head-up display.

Engine and Performance

The Prius’ engine is a 1.8-liter four cylinder engine and has a continuously variable auto transmission. The front-wheel-drive model has one electric motor and a 0.75 kWh battery pack. All-wheel-drive models have two electric motors as well as a 1.21-kWh lithium battery. The net system horsepower is 121, which is quite a small number. Although the Prius can reach highway speeds, it will not feel urgent. Low speeds are more efficient. The steering wheel provides little feedback and the handling is sluggish. The highway cruiser’s primary focus is on fuel economy and not driving pleasure. Wind and road noises are muted. The suspension system is strong and smoothens uneven roads and rough pavement. It is an easy choice for commuters.

Toyota Prius can seat five people. The seats in the Toyota Prius aren’t very comfortable, even though there is enough space for three people at the back. The middle seat is not a good place to be. For taller passengers, rear headroom and legroom can be restricted. Even with standard manual seats, the front seats offer good support and adjustability. This seat is ideal for those who commute long distances. These fabrics are high quality and the synthetic leather at higher trims is an excellent upgrade. Cargo space is available in the rear seat, which can hold up to 27.4 cubic ft and the front seats 50.7 cubic ft. This sedan can swallow larger cargo as a crossover and hatchbacks make it easier to store heavier items.
