2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge Prices, Reviews, and Pictures

The Volvo XC60 Recharge is a small, plug-in hybrid SUV that’s a Volvo. It deserves to be considered by anyone who values the environment. Although it is not as enjoyable to drive as other competitors, the XC60 Recharge offers a blistering acceleration, an elegant, user-friendly interior and decent cargo and towing capacities.

The Volvo XC60 Recharge fits well in the premium small plug-in hybrid crossover market, alongside the Lexus NX 450h and the Audi Q5e. Although it’s not as sporty and agile as the Q5e, Volvo prioritizes safety and comfort over speed. However, the XC60 Recharge is faster than its rivals and is much more economical. The NX 450h is a smoother ride.

The XC60 recharge is similar to other plug-in hybrids and is intended for drivers who don’t want to go pure EV, but still want the benefits of electrification such as increased power and fuel economy.

The interior is luxurious and can compete with any luxury crossover. It also has more electric range and gas than the rest. Although the infotainment system for the 2022 XC60 is now running on a Google Android operating platform, it is still the easiest to use. However, the 9-inch touchscreen is a bit smaller than the other segments. A 14-inch screen is available for the Lexus.

The 2022 XC60 recharge is a little more expensive than other small premium crossover PHEVs. Only the 2022 NX450h has a lower base price.

Pricing and Trims

There are four trim levels for the 2022 XC60 recharge: Inscription Expression (R-Design), Inscription (Inscription), and Polestar Engineered (Polestar Engineered). We prefer the R-Design, although the Inscription is the most common model. Below is a description of why.

The XC60 Recharge is a plug in hybrid and therefore qualifies to receive a federal income credit of $5,419. It may also qualify for state or local incentives if they are available.

Inscription Expression

The Inscription Expression starts at $55,345 without incentives. It features 18-inch wheels, Volvo’s woven textile upholstery, a 12.3 inch driver information screen, heated front seats with a driver memory function, a 10-speaker stereo system, wireless smartphone charging; dual zone climate control; standard cruise controller; standard speed control; power-retractable mirrors; and a panoramic sunroof.

The R-Design is priced at $61,495 and includes 19-inch alloys, glossy-black roof rails/window trim, an R-Design grille, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system; four-zone climate control; sporty front chairs with leather-textile upholstery; power-adjustable leg extensions; a rear-seat armrest with cupholders; and mesh aluminum interior trim.

The R-Design is a sporty design and has a lot of standard features that we like.

The Inscription trim costs $62,845, and includes bright aluminum window trim, Orrefors crystal gear choice knob, full Nappa leather upholstery as well as ventilated front seats with adjustable side bolsters.

The first three trims offer 20- and 21 inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, heated rear seats, and 20- and 21 inch wheels.

Polestar Engineered

Fully loaded, the XC60 Recharge performance trim costs $70,595. Many of the R-Design’s sportsy features are included in this trim. Additional goodies include 21-inch alloys, a unique grille, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, a 360-degree surround view camera, a Bowers & Wilkins 16 speaker sound system and full-range adaptive cruise control.

Performance and Engine

The 2022 XC60Recharge plug-in hybrid is all-wheel-drive and plug-in, just like the other PHEVs of its class. The engine’s turbocharged, supercharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine is mated to a small electric motor at the rear. An 11.6-kWh rechargeable battery pack (or 9.1 kWh) powers the electric motor. An eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting is used to supply power to the wheels. Rear wheels are driven by the rear electric motor.

The total system output is 400 horsepower with 472 pound-feet torque. The Polestar Engineered can be tuned to produce 415 horsepower. All trims have the supercharger filling it at the bottom while the turbo is spooling and working together at higher speeds. This results in jackrabbit acceleration at a Volvo-estimated 0-60 MPH time of 5.3 seconds.

The XC60 Recharge is fast and agile on the road. There is very little body roll. Although the steering is responsive, it can be a little dull. The Audi Q5e small PHEV crossover has more fun than its larger counterpart, the XC60. It is also easier to drive on mountainous roads and curvy country. The Volvo is no fool. Although the brakes are powerful, the transition from mechanical to regenerative isn’t as smooth as some of the competitors.

Volvo is a leader in comfort and seating. The XC60 is a great road-trip crossover. Standard suspension is designed to provide comfort. A self-adjusting air suspension can be added. For more dynamic handling and cornering, the Polestar Engineered trim features an electronically tuned suspension with high-performance dampers.

The XC60 Recharge is a Volvo that offers a spacious interior and high-quality trim materials. Is there anyone else that offers a crystal shift knob? It has a luxurious, elegant look. Volvo avoids the stand-alone tablet-like infotainment screens that are so popular. The center stack houses the high-resolution color touchscreen measuring 9 inches in size and is flanked by climate system air vents.

The Lincoln Corsair plug in is the best in class for front and rear legroom. However, the Volvo is close behind. There’s ample space for front and back passengers.

Volvo’s cargo space is the smallest in the class, even with its rear seats used. There’s still enough space for approximately a dozen grocery bags at 21.7 cubic feet. The total cargo volume is just under 50 cubic feet when the second-row split seating is folded flat. The Lincoln offers a class-leading 57.6 cubes.
